Review
by Bones, UK, 2011:
"The Adventures in Hyperspace young readers’
series begins with Fire Ring Race. Sadly, it is not an
impressive start. I appreciate the difficulties in bringing
something as complicated as the Star Wars universe to under 10s, but
is it necessary to reduce it to something so inconceivably trite as Fire
Ring Race. I have severe doubts that the target age will be able
to decode or comprehend some of the vocabulary in the book, which
restricts the audience to slightly older children who would, I feel,
be unsatisfied with the bland nature of the story.
"Han Solo and Chewbacca are tasked by Jabba the Hutt with
obtaining a cargo canister from Fornax Station. During their
smuggling expedition they are framed by a corrupt Imperial security
officer for the callous theft of a wedding dress. It sounds
ridiculous and reads similarly. There are such treats as Han and
Chewie posing as barbers and gently reassuring a duplicitous
shoe-shine droid that they forgive it for its transgressions in
order to trick it into revealing information to them. But the worst
part has to be Han Solo using the phrase “suffering comets” as
an exclamation of exasperation.
"Han Solo and Chewbacca are portrayed as a poor substitute for
Morcambe and Wise instead of the slick rogues that we know and
love."
