With Republic
starships scattered throughout the galaxy performing
first line defence of strategically important systems,
the fleet's responsibilities include other civil duties.
So when the Ninth Fleet receives a distress call from
the merchant vessel Deyvus, which has suffered a
malfunction rendering it powerless as it floats
dangerously close to an unstable nebula, it comes at no
surprise. As the closest craft to the Deyvus, the
Twilight, piloted by Jedi Knight Anakin
Skywalker, his young Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Captain
Rex, is ordered to effect an immediate rescue of the Deyvus.
Ahsoka is annoyed that the rescue of rich, fat traders
is not what she envisioned a Jedi should be doing in
this time of war, but Anakin points out that everybody
matters to the Jedi. As the Twilight comes
alongside the Deyvus, it is clear that the Deyvus's
stabilisers are offline causing the merchant vessel to
slide into the nebula's gravitational field. As Anakin
orders R2-D2 to cross over to the Deyvus to
interface with its maintenance systems, Ahsoka is
shocked to see heavy laser canons manned by droids
appear from the Deyvus's cargo module portholes.
Realising it's a trap, Anakin executes an evasive action
manoeuvre and while successfully evading most of the
laser fire, one shot disables the Twilight's
thrusters - the Twilight is effectively
dead-in-the-water. Now the Twilight is being
pulled towards the nebula. However the Twilight
crew's repair attempts are interrupted by a hologram
communication from the Deyvus - it's General
Grievous!
Grievous teases the Jedi that they were easily fooled by
his trap and that he eagerly awaits their destruction by
the nebula and that he will watch it from the comfort of
the Deyvus. Not to be beaten, Anakin hatches a
plan that will save them from the nebula and give them
an opportunity to capture Grievous. Using the Twilight's
grapple hooks, the Twilight anchors itself to the
Deyvus and while Ahsoka and R2-D2 attend to
repairing the Twilight, Anakin and Rex spacewalk
over to the Deyvus. Boarding via one of the
portholes, Anakin and Rex successfully subdue the droid
crew and head towards the Deyvus's bridge.
However Anakin's excitement at capturing Grievous
collapses when they discover that Grievous is not
actually on board the Deyvus. The Separatist
general has been communicating using the Deyvus
as a relay, and he has one surprise left for the Jedi:
the bridge has been rigged with enough thermal
detonators to destroy the Deyvus.
Reacting quickly, Anakin and Rex punch a hole through
the Deyvus's viewscreens and as the inevitable
decompression explosion catapults the Jedi and clone
into space, Ahsoka simultaneously releases the Twilight's
grapple hold on the Deyvus and picks up the two.
Just as the Twilight reaches a safe distance, the
Deyvus explodes, destroying the vessel.
Barely escaping with their lives, Anakin reflects with
Ahsoka that their mission has shown that appearances can
be deceptive and although they have failed to capture
Grievous, there's always another day. |
